Beyond Smart-People Who Outsmart Computers

The principle character in this 47 minute video is Daniel, a savant who can recite pi to 22,000 plus decimal places, do complex mathematical computations in his head, and other fantastic feats. The central dramatic question in this presentation is: Can Daniel learn Icelandic, a nearly impossible language to learn over years, in less than a week. Along the way several other fellows pop up who have unbelievable skills of their own, including the man who was the inspiration for the Dustin Hoffmann movie Rain Man. The obvious academic question here is: What is intelligence anyway, and do the rest of us have the potential to do what these guys do?
