October 8, 1871: The Night America Burned | io9

Everybody knows about the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871, which killed around 300 people. Hardly anyone knows that on that same night, the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin killed between 1,200 and 2,500 people. There were fires that same night in Michigan, too, in Holland, Port Huron, and Manistee, too, killing only 50 to 100 people.
