The Ultimate History Lesson is a 5-hour course (in 5 parts) in which John Gatto explains what has happened to American public school education. Gatto offers a fascinating discussion of what American history really is, not glossed over by text books. Looking at the big picture, Gatto describes the intentional suppression of the individual by the school systems, a system based on Prussian military education.

John Taylor Gatto was a public school teacher for 30 years, who won the New York City teacher of the year award, and the New York State teacher of the year award as well. His books include Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling, The Exhausted School, A Different Kind of Teacher, and The Underground History of American Education.

I have only watched the first segment of this series, but I’m pretty sure watching it all will be worth the time. Gatto is a deep thinker with a great memory and the courage to say exactly what he thinks.

The lengthy introduction (17 min.) by the interviewer is, in my opinion, at least partly skippable.

Part 1 is above. Parts 2-5 follow below.
