I became good friends with Ed Thompson when we made a documentary about him called A Remarkable Man. The title doesn’t do his unique character justice. I have never met anyone else like Ed and I probably never will. After the documentary, Ed and I went on to create a weekly radio commentary, Just a Little Common Sense.
Our friendship never wavered during the eight or so years I knew him. I feel privileged to have worked on those projects with him, and had looked forward to our friendship growing even stronger as we grew older. Unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards.
Ed was diagnosed with 4th stage pancreatic cancer in October, 2010, and I was honored that he called me earlier in 2011 to ask if we could do a video recording his thoughts and ideas now that he was facing a terminal illness. We shot the footage on the evening of July 10 and for part of the afternoon on July 11, 2011.
Ed experienced considerable pain on those two days yet the pain never was apparent to the camera.
